Vital Element for Plant Growth and Maintenance

Norselight_High_Pressure_Sodium_FLS_2Hydroponic lights are vital elements for planting and maintaining a successful hydroponics garden. Sunlight is not always available these plants so you need to provide an alternative to get the maximum results from your hydroponic grown plants. When growing any plant indoors you will need to make sure that you provide an excellent light source for your plants because the light that you provide directly affects the plants health.

During the growth phase of your plants, you will want to provide them with a combination of blue and red color hydroponic lights. For excellent vegetable growth like lettuce and basil, a very wide spectrum bulb such as the Metal Halide bulb can be used. These Metal Halide hydroponic lights emit blue light that is required by plants for photosynthesis leading to growth.

For longer life expectancy & efficiency, the high-pressure sodium lights are used because they emit more light & lasts longer with twice the average life of a halide bulb. They also emit red light, which is good for the flowering or fruit stage of the plant. Moreover, Fluorescent Grow lights are also available which are good for violets, orchids & other houseplants that do not require much sunlight.

How to Grow Self-Blanching Celery

This is a type of early celery that is less hardy and has less flavour than the normal kind. It can be grown for use only in September and October, and has to be cleared before there is any serious risk of frost. This celery can be grown on the flat and does not need earthing up.

Dig over a strip of ground and add well-rotted compost or old dung at the rate of one large bucketful to the yard run. A week before planting, lightly rake in a fish manure with a 5 per cent potash content at the rate of 4 ounces to the square yard.

Because the plants are quick to mature, do not sow the seed before the middle of March. Sowing is otherwise the same as for celery.

Instead of putting the plants out in rows, plant in a square or patch, spacing the plants out 9 inches apart each way. Thus the plants will shade each other and help to keep the stems white. Plant out firmly at the end of June or the beginning of July and flood the ground after planting.

Gettring Rid of Carpenter Bees for Good

Carpenter bees, somewhat like bumble bees without yellow stripes, are black, big, slow flying bees, which turn out to be real menace during the spring season, in most parts of USA and even in other parts of the world. They are not as harmful as the killer bees. The male bee doesn’t even have a sting, whereas the female has a stinger, which she uses when provoked. They mostly build nests, probably on your sidings, furnishings, deck, and window frames etc., by which they had got this name. They like to burrow tunnels in wood to form their nest.

Since there are risks of the bees biting you all of a sudden, when you unknowingly happen to be near their nests, it is wise to get rid of them as soon as possible. Some of the easy ways include applying paint to all your wooden items, filling the nest with steel wool, spraying insecticide, fill their nest with some wood putty, call an exterminator, smacking them with a badminton bat or spraying diesel or petrol. Any of these ways is sure to keep these carpenter bees away from bothering or harming you. Be careful to wear protective clothing while handling pesticides or other chemicals for spraying.

If you don’t want to attempt this, you should know that you’re not alone. What you can do is try to hire a professional pest control company. What they can do is come out and spray the areas to ensure that the bees never come around again. This is a great way to not only get rid of them, but make sure that they don’t ever come back.

Organic Farming is Sustainable Farming

Organic farming avoids the usage of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides and genetically modified organisms. It emphasizes on using techniques that realign with the notion of sustainability such as using compost fertilizer gathered from organic dead materials and relying on pest-preying organisms for pest control. All these form part of the ecological balance. Organic farmers usually abide by the IFOAM, otherwise known as the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement rules and regulations. Soil erosion is mitigated through organic farming and biodiversity is encouraged in the farm. By maintaining the healthy balance between environment and organisms inhibiting it, sustainability is no longer a dream but a reality. Inevitably, some farmers would still stick to conventional farming methods because these lead to a higher crop yield. However, one should look further than that as after a number of years, the soil quality difference will only lead to lower crop yield for conventional farming.

What is Aquaponics? Saves a Lot of Water

What Is Aquaponics? Aquaponics is the best way of utilizing the benefits of both aquaculture and hydroponics. In fact, it gives much more than what the two systems would help you save or produce. The commercial use of the aquaponics system can produce vegetables to meet the demand of the entire world population. Aquaponics produces fish and vegetables by using up very little water and is perfect for areas where it is either difficult to find water or where the water supply is limited. You do not need to water your plants externally. The water that is there in the system will help you do that for at least 3-4 days. After that you might have to add some water to make up for the loss in evaporation and transpiration. The aquaponics gives more value for your money spent and you can operate it on a commercial basis if you want to.

Bonsai Trees for Christmas

Are you frantically trying to figure out what Christmas gift to buy for that last person on your list? Consider Bonsai trees for Christmas! We all have at least one person who is difficult, if not impossible to buy for. Either that person does not really have any hobbies or interests, or they have enough money to just go out and buy whatever they want for themselves throughout the year. While that is great for them, it makes shopping for them extremely frustrating. The usual default gifts of cans of popcorn and new socks just get boring after a few years. That is where the beauty of Bonsai trees for Christmas comes in. It is the perfect gift for the person who has everything. They do not require complicated care, and they add a sense of the outdoors to the home, even in the middle of winter! Be sure to buy a Bonsai tree for that hard-to-buy-for person on your Christmas list.

Controlling Annoying Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are often found near wet locations because that is where they lay their eggs. They do not need a lot of water though, sometimes just a rain barrel or a small plastic pool will do. If you have small puddles of accumulated water near you home you should try to dry them up or treat them with some mosquito killer. They make mosquito dunks that you can drop in water; it will release a poison to kill all mosquito larvae and eggs. Another option is to introduce some mosquito fish or dragon fly larvae. Both of these creatures are natural predators of mosquitoes.

If you want to combat flying mosquitoes then you can get a bug zapper or a mosquito trap. Both of these are nice, because they provide protection in over a 1 acre radius. If you want to keep mosquitoes away, then you can get some mosquito repellent.
